Coating Technology of Garment Interlinings (II): Paste Dot Process

Following the previous chapter about the powder dot process, today we introduce the second mainstream technology — the paste dot process.
If the powder dot process is painting with "powder", the paste dot process is writing with "adhesive paste". Its working principle: hot-melt adhesive particles are blended with water, thickeners and other additives to form a paste with controllable fluidity. The paste is precisely printed onto the base fabric in dot form via a doctor blade engraved roll. Afterwards, the fabric goes through moisture drying and high-temperature sintering to firmly anchor adhesive dots on the fabric.
The biggest advantage of the paste dot process lies in minimum thermal shock and mechanical damage to base fabrics. Printing can be carried out at ambient temperature, which differs from the powder dot method that transfers adhesives by heated roller pressing and melting. Although high-temperature sintering is still required to shape adhesives afterwards, thin and heat-sensitive nonwovens avoid direct roller compression and instant intense heat impact. Therefore, this process is ideal for lightweight, loose-structured or thermally sensitive nonwovens. It maintains sufficient bonding strength while preserving the original hand feel and physical properties of base fabrics.
Naturally, the paste dot process has its limitations. Containing water and additives, the paste consumes more energy for drying during production, leading to lower overall production efficiency compared with powder dot. Besides, improper additive formulation or insufficient drying and sintering will impair the final bonding fastness and wash resistance of interlinings. Under the same coating weight, paste dot interlinings generally have poorer air permeability than powder dot types.
Despite its shortcomings, thanks to its mild processing characteristics, the paste dot process holds an irreplaceable position for lightweight fashion interlinings and ladies’ garment interlinings.
In the next chapter, the final episode of this series, we will uncover the double dot process that integrates the strengths of both technologies. Stay tuned.
