Coating Technology of Garment Interlinings (III): Double Dot Process

In the previous two chapters, we introduced the powder dot and paste dot processes respectively. Each has its unique strengths and limitations. Is there a process that combines the advantages of both? The answer is yes — the star of this final chapter: the double dot process.
As the name suggests, the core of the double dot process lies in its two-layer composite adhesive dot structure. Two layers of hot-melt adhesives with different functions are applied sequentially onto the base fabric. The dominant formulation in the industry is a combination of bottom paste dot plus top powder dot.
The complete process is as follows. Step one: adhesive base paste is coated onto the base fabric via rotary screen printing. The base paste is usually blended with functional additives for anchoring and isolation. Step two: after pre-drying to a semi-dry state, fine hot-melt adhesive powder is applied by professional engraved roll powder dot equipment and temporarily held by the semi-dry base paste. The material then undergoes heating and sintering, allowing the two adhesive layers to fuse into integrated composite dots.
The ingenuity of this technology lies in the division of labor between the two adhesive layers. The bottom paste dot improves adhesion between adhesive and base fabric, effectively preventing dot shedding when applied on difficult-to-bond substrates such as coated fabrics and high-density textiles. The top powder dot fully melts and wets the shell fabric during garment fusing, building a stable, tough bonding interface. With coordinated functions of both layers, the composite effect achieves “1+1>2”.
Accordingly, the double dot process combines the excellent fusing performance of powder dot and the broad base fabric compatibility of paste dot. It represents the highest technical threshold and most balanced comprehensive performance among interlining coating technologies, widely adopted for interlinings used in high-end suits, wool overcoats and various difficult-to-bond functional fabrics. On the flip side, double dot production lines require higher capital investment and stricter process parameter control.
We have now completed the introduction of the three major interlining coating processes: powder dot, paste dot and double dot. None is inherently superior; selection depends on fabric characteristics and end-use requirements. We hope this series can serve as a clear reference for your interlining selection and product development. Thank you for reading.
