Application of Hot Melt Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (HMPSA) in Female Care

2026-07-28

Latest company news about Application of Hot Melt Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (HMPSA) in Female Care

In the manufacturing of feminine hygiene products—such as sanitary pads, panty liners, and ultra-thin period underwear—Hot Melt Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (HMPSA) plays a pivotal role in ensuring security, discretion, and skin-friendly comfort.

Unlike baby diapers, where adhesives endure heavy liquid loads and high tension from elastic strands, feminine care products place a heavy focus on clean removal (no glue residue on underwear), thinness, zero noise, and skin safety.

Key Application Modules in Feminine Hygiene

Feminine pads typically consist of a nonwoven or perforated film top sheet, an acquisition distribution layer (ADL), an ultra-thin absorbent core, a liquid-impermeable back sheet film, and individual wrapper packaging. HMPSA is applied across three core functional areas:

1. Positioning Adhesive (Back-Glue & Wing-Glue)

This is the most critical and challenging adhesive application in feminine care. The adhesive is applied directly to the exterior of the back sheet film (and side wings) and covered with a release paper.

  • Primary Function: Holds the pad securely in place on underwear during active movement, body heat, and moisture exposure.

  • Key Performance Demands:

    • Clean Peel (Residue-Free): The adhesive must peel away easily when discarded without leaving tacky residue or tearing delicate fabrics (cotton, lace, silk, or synthetic blends).

    • High Dynamic Shear Strength: Prevents the pad from shifting or bunching up during physical activity.

    • Age & Temperature Stability: Must not harden or bleed through the PE film during long shelf storage or under high summer temperatures.

2. Construction Bonding (Structural Lamination)

  • Primary Function: Bonds the top sheet, ADL, ultra-thin absorbent core, and PE back sheet together to form a unified, flexible pad structure.

  • Key Performance Demands:

    • Breathability & Permeability: Must be applied in fine, open patterns (spiral or fiber spray) so it does not hinder liquid penetration into the absorbent core.

    • Flexibility & Zero Stiffening: Ultra-thin pads must remain soft and pliable to contour naturally to the body without creating a stiff, "plastic-like" feel.

    • Noise Reduction: Prevents rustling sounds during movement for maximum user discretion.

3. Packaging & Wrapper Sealing (Individual Wrap Glue)

  • Primary Function: Seals the individual protective pouch/wrapper around each sanitary napkin.

  • Key Performance Demands:

    • Quiet & Easy Opening: Provides a firm seal to protect the pad from dust and moisture prior to use, but opens smoothly and quietly without loud tearing noises.

Critical Standards for Feminine Care HMPSA

Because feminine care products come into close contact with sensitive areas, manufacturers enforce strict regulatory and physical criteria:

  • Hypoallergenic & PureCare Standards: Must be non-toxic, non-irritating, low VOC, and dermatologically tested (ISO 10993) to protect sensitive skin. Formulated with 100% water-white hydrogenated resins.

  • Zero Odor / Scent-Free: Fragrance-free and low-emissions formulation to prevent unpleasant chemical smells when opening the package.

  • Substrate Versatility: Excellent adhesion to ultra-thin PE breathable films (often down-gauged to 12–14 gsm) without causing thermal burn-through during application.
