Solvent-based adhesives typically contain 30–60% organic solvent. Every kilogram applied releases hundreds of grams of VOC unless the solvent is captured and destroyed, and abatement equipment, drying tunnels and permits have become the most expensive part of running a line. Solvent-free hot melt adhesive removes that cost at the source: 100% solids, no drying oven, negligible emissions in normal operation.
| Parameter | Solvent-Based | Solvent-Free Hot Melt |
|---|---|---|
| Solid content | 40–70% | 100% |
| VOC emissions | High — needs abatement | Negligible |
| Drying oven | Required | Not required |
| Energy demand | High | Low — heat only at the applicator |
| Line speed | Limited by drying capacity | Generally higher |
| Fire load in storage | Flammable solvents | Low |
In flexible packaging, low VOC lamination adhesive is already the benchmark for film-to-film and film-to-foil structures. Reactive polyurethane hot melts deliver the initial bond on-machine and cure to a heat- and chemical-resistant laminate. With no solvent to drive off, converters gain higher running speeds, lower coating weight, no retained-solvent odour and a compliance file that supports recyclability claims. For brand owners the gain is not only regulatory: procurement specifications increasingly demand a documented low-VOC route to recyclable structures.
Most converters run both chemistries in parallel during validation, which removes the risk of a mid-transition production stop.
Solvent-free hot melt adhesive is no longer a compliance compromise; in most lamination and assembly work it is simply the cleaner, cheaper route. Audit the baseline, validate on real substrates, then convert — and you have both the cost saving and the paperwork in hand. Suppliers who can document the change early are also the ones invited into the next round of eco-driven tenders.
