A modern mattress is a multi-layer composite: comfort foams, support cores, insulator pads, quilting panels and ticking fabrics are bonded together to deliver the right feel, durability and hygiene. The adhesive used in this process must be strong yet flexible, fast-curing yet safe for workers, and free of solvents and odour. Hot melt adhesives — supplied as bonding webs or applied as spray adhesives — have become the industry standard for exactly these reasons.
| Application Area | Adhesive Form | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Foam-to-foam lamination (comfort layers) | Spray hot melt | Quick, even bonding of PU foam, memory foam and latex layers |
| Quilting panel to foam core | Hot melt web | Uniform full-surface bond without stiff spots or show-through |
| Insulator pad over pocket springs | Spray hot melt | Secure pad placement preventing spring impressions |
| Edge/reinforcement and handle attachment | Hot melt (granule or web) | Structural fixing of borders, handles and vent valves |
| Pillow-top and topper assembly | Hot melt web | Breathable, soft bonding preserving cushioning feel |
Hot melt adhesive webs are dry, roll-form nonwoven adhesives that melt under heat and pressure. In mattress production they excel where uniform coverage and softness matter: a full-surface web bond distributes stress evenly, prevents delamination during rolling and vacuum packaging, and avoids the hard spots that solvent or spray-only bonding can create. Webs also enable breathable bonds — important for moisture management in sleep products — and eliminate solvent emissions entirely.
Spray-applied hot melt adhesives deposit a fine, controlled adhesive pattern over large surfaces in seconds. They are the workhorse for foam-to-foam lamination on high-speed production lines, offering immediate tack for instant lay-up and reduced cycle times. Low-pressure spray systems keep adhesive penetration shallow, preserving foam softness, while the solvent-free formula improves workplace air quality and complies with increasingly strict VOC regulations.
JCC (Tianyang New Materials Shanghai Technology Co., Ltd.) supplies hot melt adhesive webs and spray-grade granules in PA, PES, TPU and EVA chemistries for mattress manufacturers, backed by two decades of application experience.
